What I Eat
Being a full time, working student I tend to typically eat the same foods everyday with that being said they are convenient and quick for me to make. Eating healthy is usually one of the hardest things for people to stick too, not only is nutrition a bit complicated, but it differs for every.. single.. person! So what I eat in a day will not and should not be the same for you, so don't eat it just cause I did. I am also a very small human lol. Something that has changed my life is listening to my body, and what I mean by that is when I ate a certain food and it made me feel "icky" I started to acknowledge that. Many individuals live with food intolerance and don't address it, but I was sick of being sick, ya know? Don't ignore your body, it's not normal to feel bloated, cramping or to be running to the bathroom after meals. If you're one of those people that were like me always saying, "ughh why did I eat that" chances are you need to change something. If you want me write about my food intolerance and how I compensate for the foods I have had to cut out of my diet, let me know. Since eating clean and healthy is something that can be easily brushed off when the weekend rolls around or when life gets busy I always make sure I have loads of fresh food in my apartment. Yes, I go to the grocery store every two days. I certainly am a poor college student, if I can do it, so can you. I make grocery shopping a priority because having a constant supply of healthy options makes it the easy option. Now you're probably like okay Cass we just wanted to know what you ate, but it's a lifestyle not a diet which is why all these little things are just as important to achieve your nutrition goals. Moving forward, I used to track my macros closely now I am an intuitive eater. I eat when I am hungry, I stop when I am full and I don't force myself to hit a specific caloric goal. My daily diet consist mostly of vegetables, lean meat, fruit and seeds & nuts.
Breakfast: Nothing exciting here, my breakie doesn't change much because it is based on what I can eat between the gym and class. My go to has been a breakfast sandwich on seeded bread or an egg scramble. Both consist of egg whites, ham, and laughing cow cheese wedge.
Lunch: Eat yo veggggies! I make it a point to fill half my plate up with vegetables. I always like to have at least three different colored veggies on my plate, this ensures you're getting a variety of different vitamin's in your diet. These nutrient dense foods are beneficial for your digestion, skin, hair, energy and they're full of fiber meaning you'll feel fuller, longer. Then I usually have a source of protein for lunch which may be fish, shrimp, chicken, or lean turkey.
Dinner: This meal is usually just a combination of everything I have in my fridge or you can be fancy and call it a "nourish bowl". The base of these meals are either spinach and kale, spaghetti squash, or zucchini noodles I tend to make my dinner as colorful as possible. I don't always add meat to every meal due to the extra inflammation it causes to my body based on my workout for that day. Like I said before, it really depends.. so just listen to your body.
Snacks: I have a variety of fruit, nuts and seeds for my snacks, as well as a protein shake (PEScience) before bed with peanut butter (old home 100% all natural). Most importantly, three liters of water a day. It's impossible to address everything in one blog, so feel free to ask any questions and I'd be happy to answer! :)
I know nutrition can be one of the hardest aspects of maintaining a healthy lifestyle, I'd be lying if I said it was easy for me to figure out at first. Don't expect it to fall into place quickly, it took me about eight months to figure out what foods worked best for my body type and my style of training. If I focused on nutrition earlier I would have reached my physique goals much quicker. Today we see so much on social media that makes us "scared" of certain foods, I used to be one of those girls. From one fitness enthusiast to another... please practice balance, eat the dang cookie if you want it, maintain a healthy relationship with food, don't avoid social gatherings because there will be unhealthy food, if you're suffering from an eating disorder or struggling with body image issues reach out to somebody. Listen to your body, eat good food, and most importantly love yourself! xox
Until next time,
